The Ellen Adarna Experience

It was a fan boy slash fan girl day last Saturday night as I accompany B and his posse at the Ellen Adarna autograph signing at Robinson’s Galleria.

It was my first time to attend an event such as this, and I cannot believe that I am a part of the bunch whom I used to call “jologs” and losers for lining up for hours just to have their magazines and/or posters signed. Okay, that was mean; I now take back my initial reaction over them fan boys. It was actually fun, believe it or not. It was fascinating to see all those men (plus a handful of women) patiently waiting in line, clutching their DSLRs and their magazines, trying to catch a glimpse of Ellen.

We basically waited for an hour and a half, and it took Ellen less than three minutes to sign the boys’ magazines. Hilarious. But like I said, it was a fun experience.

Yes. I. Have. Always. Wanted. To. Have. Wavy. Hair.
I am one of those girls who was born with smooth, silky, yet super straight hair; and it annoys me how hair dressers find it hard to curl my hair whenever I want them to. Apparently, my hair has a mind of its own and do not wish to be curled up in any way possible. My mom wouldn't hear of it whenever I ask her if I may have my hair colored or permed. Yes, my dear trolls, I'm 23 years old, getting married in a few days, and I still ask permission from my momma. Now shut it.

Anyways, highways. I was out with B and his cousin Dara yesterday, and we've decided that I should get hair extensions on a whim. Believe me, I was beyond excited. I felt like a thirteen year old who's about to have her first glass of beer or her first stick of cig.

And as much as I want to gush about how awesome and feminine I feel, let me just show you how I now look like:

What a year starter indeed!

Now let's take a look at how these two stars look in "real life":

CHARICE:

I actually had to zoom the photo and look for her name just to be sure that she really is Charice. I mean, I am aware that she had a MINOR surgery done on her jaws for her stint at Glee, but I didn't imagine it to end up looking like THAT.

If you take a closer look at her jaws, you'll notice how they're not photoshopped well. Her right jaw has a subtle, pointy edge, while her left jaw has a more round and slightly oval shape.

JINKEE:

I'm not as surprised on this one as compared to Charice's magazine cover, but this definitely made me laugh my arse off! This is one poorly edited photo. Whoever edited this made Jinkee's face looks like it's been photoshopped on somebody else's body. In short, she looks HORRENDOUS. Mega Magazine seriously needs to a hire a new artist, or else they're DOOMED.

I have nothing against Jinkee, I mean I'm sure we're all aware on how obsessed she is with plastic surgery:

I know we're on the age of super advanced and high-tech technology, but we should know our limits. We have to know when to stop. These magazine covers are portraying a different notion of reality to the public. They're giving us a distorted reality. While it is important for these stars to "look good" for the public, they still should not lose the essence of their own persona.

Make-up, jewelries, designer shoes, designer and clothes and whatnots... these things are nothing but superficial. All they do is give us the false notion that they're all we need in order to survive in this fake society. Presenting a great image to the public is important, but wanting to look good in order to please, earn praises, and stand out from everyone is too much.

This life isn't about how awesome everyone thinks you are (or how awesome you think you are), nor is it about how popular and rich you are. It's simply about loving and caring. It's about meeting and keeping real friends, making other people happy, and never thinking about hate, jealousy, or greed.

Haters may come and go, but at the end of the day, it's still your choice to either let them pass or succumb to their immaturity and close mindedness. Never let these road blocks keep your from moving forward with your life.

Life is beautiful.
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.

This life is more worth living by simply loving and caring, not just by looking good and getting everyone's attention.

Christmas Funventure

Happy Holidays, trolls! I’m quite certain you guys are starting on your post-Holiday diet just about now. Don't even. K, I'm kidding. But enough about experimental diets and wanting to lose weight, eating us FUN. I’m here to talk about the number one holiday kids and kids-at-heart wait year-long to celebrate: CHRISTMAS.

Here in the Philippines, you’ll know it’s Christmas once the “-ber” months come – SeptemBER, OctoBER, yaddi, yaddi yadda. You’ll see a ton of kids running around the streets singing Christmas carols in exchange of a few pennies or some treats; numerous twinkling lights and fancy trinkets adorn every home, local roads, and malls; the expected – yet still very shocking – Christmas in Manila traffic; and of course, Christmas will never be complete without the yummy puto bumbong and bibingka after every Simbang Gabi.

This year, Christmas was, sadly, just like any other day for most households. I personally noticed the lack of “Christmas spirit” in the air. There were only a handful of carolers who visited us, most homes didn’t have any Christmas lights or even a Christmas tree, and even the malls weren’t as jam-packed with last-minute shoppers as compared to previous years! Is this the end of a supposed-to-be festive holiday? I'm too frightened to even imagine it.

While I, myself, am bothered by this lack of excitement, I tried to make this Christmas a tad bit special for my last Christmas with my family: *sobs*

Thanksgiving Hangover

It has been WEEKS since Thanksgiving, and up until now I've been hearing snide comments and sick humor over my celebration of Thanksgiving. Unfortunately for some daft people, they think Asian countries do not have the right to celebrate Thanksgiving since it's not part of our culture. Don't you think that's a tad bit too racist?

Change, anyone?

Every person, no matter what race or country they belong to, should have the right to be thankful even for just a day; even if it's not a part of their tradition.

So, racism and close mindedness aside, I decided to enumerate the top three reasons why I should be thankful:
1. Loving and Supportive Family
I am far from being the perfect daughter, sister, cousin, niece, or whatshisface than anyone else is on this planet. Yet no matter how many stupid decisions and mistakes I have made over my twenty three years of existence, my family always been there, continuously supporting and guiding me without any hesitation. I am thankful for having been born and raised in a family where one's social status, level of education, and even looks is not the basis for knowing how genuine a person is. I love my family and I wouldn't wish for another life without them.

2. True Love
People say that high school is where you find your bridesmaids, not your husband. Well, I beg to differ. High school was where I found my soulmate, my best friend, my partner in crime... the love of my life. And I am glad that I will soon have the honor of calling him my husband.

3. Good Health and a Meaningful Life
Last weekend B and I attended a retreat for soon-to-wed couples; and after spending three wonderful days of peace and solace, I found inner peace. I found reasons why life is so special, and why I should live it to the fullest. Of course, everything about our weekend retreat is reserved for another post. I'm just thankful that God gave B and I the chance to be a part of that retreat, which had definitely made our relationship better and much stronger.

See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Three awesome reasons why I feel eternally blessed and grateful. Now, tell me, why shouldn't I be thankful?

The Best of November

En route home, the jeep I was riding ran out of gas. According to the driver, he wasn't aware that he was almost out of gas. Wow. For a man who must've been driving for nearly half his life, how could he have missed that? Thank God for this other jeepney driver who was kind enough to give us a push until we reached the gas station. Gave me a fright when the other jeep's fenders crashed into our jeep's bumper. Or was it the other way around? Sorry, I don't talk cars.

A Different Coffee Experience

That guy right there is one of my good Starbucks barista friend, Bamba. And that yummy drink below him is one of my all-time favorite slash feel-good Starbucks drink, Starbucks' Basic Black Tea.

You see, Bamba just loooove experimenting; creating new drinks everyday or whenever he feels like it. So yesterday, during one of my lull, "I'm tryna do thesis" moments, he happened to chance by me and asked if he could surprise me with his new drink. Well, you know me, as much as I love to try new things, I am watching my calorie intake so I graciously declined his offer. But then... Bamba gave me his "oh-no-you-didn't-bitch-you-don't-have-a-choice" look. Haha. Long story short: ~~I HAVE TO GIVE IN~~ I GAVE IN. And, boy, was it worth it!

The amazing new drink?
BASIC BLACK TEA WITH HAZELNUT AND SOY MILK

It was, hands down, one of THE best Starbucks drink I've had for ages.
Pretty much reminded me of Serenitea's Okinawa and Nagasaki Milk Teas.
And, yes, it was worth all the penny [and calories].

What are you waiting for, trolls?
Go to the nearest Starbucks store and now and experience heaven in a cup!
After all, that's one sticker less from getting a planner. Tee hee :]

Dear friends,

Last November 21, I lost a dear friend. Someone I’ve cherished and valued for as long as I can remember; a friend who has shared the joys and perils of commuting to and from school for half a decade. She had been a great friend, a confidant, and an adviser. She had been one of my batch’s funniest persons and greatest dancers. And it pains me to say that my friend is now gone, and is finally in her happy place with our Creator.

Melissa “Dada” Laurente
June 20, 1988 – November 21, 2011

Not known to many, Dada had suffered from a tumor growing on her spine, causing tremendous pain on her thighs, making her unable to walk, not even stand. She refused to tell everyone of her condition because of the pain she doesn’t want to inflict on others. She wanted everyone to see how strong and happy she was amidst all the pain because she believed that one day, someday, she’ll be able recover and be the happy and quirky person she once was. Unfortunately, last Monday, Dada finally succumbed to the pain. She suffered from a cardiac arrest due to embolism complications, thus causing her death.

Friends, her family is going through so much right now; grieving over the loss of their youngest child, their only daughter; trying to accept the pain, trying to let go, and trying to move on. While this, in its essence, is already too much to bear, there are still other problems at bay. Dada had been confined at St. Lukes Hospital for 4 months, incurring a rather high cost of hospitalization expenses. Now, her family is in need not only of emotional and spiritual support, but of financial support as well. They have nothing to give in return but a sincere and simple ‘thank you’ for all the help that they have been receiving and will receive. I am sure that Dada, wherever she is, is smiling down on us, eternally grateful for all the support that we have been giving her family.

Thank you for the memories, Dada, for being a part of our lives even for just a short time. When we grow old, we will all look back and remember that once in our lives, we had a friend named Dada, who have inspired us, and have helped make us the person that we are now. Thank you, Dada. GM Diet Part 2: The Ratatouille Special

Today’s segment of A-Cooks is inspired by one of the famous cooks on the big screen: REMY

I know the title says “Part 2” but I’m on my fifth day now (yay for me!); and for those of you who are curious, here is a list of my diet:

Day 1: melons, apples, oranges -- ergo: torture
Day 2: vegetable frittata
Day 3: -- is basically what this post is about
Day 4: 5 bananas and non-fat milk
Day 5: 3 grilled kebab sticks and 6 whole roasted tomatoes (yum!)
Day 6: Tomorrow :)

According to my GM Diet guide, my third day diet will consist of unlimited fruits and vegetables. That morning I had a bowl of fresh melons, apples, and grapes -- plus a few teardrops on the side. Ha! I realized over the course of my 5-day (and counting) diet that I can survive more on vegetables than fruits alone. For some reason, fruits made me hungrier and crankier. So I resolved to eat fruits in the morning and vegetables for the rest of the day.

As for my lunch, I ate the remaining portions of Monday’s frittata, and then carried on to cook an early dinner: Ratatouille.

Forgive me for not sharing any photos, but I was in a rush to get to school that the thought of taking even a single, pixilated, blurry photograph did not cross my mind. For the record, the Ratatouille didn’t turn out as swell-looking as my Frittata, so you guise didn’t really miss anything.

Anyway, here’s how you do it:

Ingredients:
1 medium eggplant
1 medium onion
2 large tomatoes
2 large red peppers
2 medium zucchini
1 bay leaf
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp olive oil

Directions:
1. Chop onion coarsely.
2. Heat olive oil on medium heat in a large saucepan.
3. Saute onion until softened, for about 5 min.
4. While onion is cooking, prepare the other vegetables.
5. Add garlic when onion is nearly finished softening.
6. Core and seed peppers and cut into medium size cubes.
7. Wash zucchini, remove stem end, and cut into chunks.
8. Core tomatoes and cut into large cubes.
9. Peel and cube eggplant.
10. As each vegetable is cut up, add it to the pot with a sprinkle of salt.
11. Add bay leaf and cover the pot.
12. Stir occasionally to ensure the vegetables are all moistened. Simmer for 20 minutes or until vegetables are soft.
13. Uncover and continue to simmer to allow liquid to evaporate. Mixture should be like a stew, not like a soup.

Let's Go Vegan!

What’s up, trolls? Here’s another vain attempt of unleashing the inner chef in me.

I am currently doing this thing called the GM Diet, which is much less of a torture than having to consume just water for a day. Believe me, I cried during the first day. But enough about my diet rants, it was my choice to do this, I shouldn’t be complaining. Now, let’s get down to business.

So according to my GM Diet guide, I should be consuming just veggies today. First reaction: "Seriously?!" I am not a vegetable person and to imagine myself eating that for an entire day is unfathomable. But thanks to Ms. Jenni Epperson's early morning tweet: "Start strong. Start beautiful. Just "start"!, I was inspired to finish this GMwhatshisnameDiet until my wedding day... or until my stomach say "I give up" ;) I was thinking of making a Ratatouille, but opted for an easier and much less oily dish so I made Vegetable Frittata instead.

Here’s what you need:
5 eggs
2 tbsp low-fat milk
1 cup diced tomatoes
2 oz goat cheese, crumbled (you may substitute if you wish)
2 cups chopped broccoli (fresh or frozen and thawed)
Salt and pepper to taste

Your “concoction” should look somewhat like this:

Directions:
1. Mix eggs and milk in a bowl.
2. Add crumbled goat cheese and chopped vegetables.
3. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Spoon mixture into muffin tins (or any tin container) coated with cooking spray.
5. Bake at 350° for about 15min or until "set" and golden on top.
6. Serve with a smile :)

Fact: You may roast the tomato and garlic the broccoli before adding them to your mixture for a better-tasting frittata. I chose not to for dietary purposes.

An exaggerated, usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation.

Phobia. So that’s how it feels.

If you ask me two weeks back what my greatest fear is, that would be roaches. Hands down. No contest. End of story. Kthanksbye. That’s how simple it was for me back then. But a couple of days ago, something happened that made me develop a sudden fear in fast moving vehicles. Unbelievable. I guess that marks the end of my affair with roller coasters.

I used to have this idiotic notion that the better looking (i.e., clean, new, sleek and shiny) an automobile is, the safer it is. Apparently, I was wrong, and had to learn my lesson the hard way.

I was on my way home after a long day in school, and being my usual lazy self, I decided to skip commuting and rode a cab instead. Several old, frail-looking cabs have passed and offered me a ride, but I declined their gracious offers nonetheless thinking that it would be unsafe for me considering the condition their cabs seem to be in. So imagine my delight when I chanced upon a posh-looking cab. It was so sleek and clean that safety fell upon me the moment I got in and sat on its well-maintained leather seats. Add to that was the driver’s friendly demeanor, and how he seems to ease through the traffic, converse with me, and sing along with the songs on the radio all at the same time. I’ve ridden cabs for so many times my entire life and have been so used to drivers who drive like maniacs on the road, which is why I was adamant to the speed rate to which the driver was going. To me, it was anything but unusual. I was hearing this soft squeaky sound, but feigned ignorance thinking that perhaps the tires only need lubrication. Little did I know, the brake has already given up.

We were along Jupiter road when the lights on the stoplight turned red. The cab driver kept hitting the brakes, but the cab won’t stop. It didn’t even slow down. I was already anticipating the impact whilst panicking inside, and braced myself for the huge blow. I wanted to scream, but I can’t seem to find my voice. In the end, the cab driver decided to save his life and veered the cab towards the direction where my side will directly hit the car in front of us. Douchebaggery at its finest. Well, that’s life, I guess.

The car we hit was Chrysler’s latest model, and thank God for its sturdy behind, the impact of the blow was minimal. I ended up having a bruised knee and a fractured finger. Too bad for the cab, which sustained most of the damages, its hood was almost totaled. And the Chrysler? Well there was a scratch or two, and its driver seemed like he doesn’t give an ounce of care.

I’ve experienced a number of car accidents, but the fear I felt during that time was beyond anything I have felt and imagined. I was literally shaking from head to toe when I got out of the cab, but was conscious enough to contact B who was more than willing to fetch me.

By now you’re probably thinking, “Where’s the phobia in that?”

I didn’t realize back then the accident’s impact on my being.

Yesterday, my sister and I were in a quaint coffee shop, studying, and simply hanging out. It was getting late so we both decided to take a cab ride home. Unfortunately for me, the cab driver was trying to keep himself from falling asleep and was driving recklessly. And that’s when I felt it: FEAR. Fear for my life. Fear that the cab may hit another car, thus the reason for my demise. The day of the accident flashed back to me like some poorly made music video of a horrible, horrible song. I was too stunned that words fail to come out of my mouth. I was scared beyond my wits and was fighting back my tears that my only resolution was to grab my sister’s arm and hold on to it as tight as I can. I’m quite certain I bruised it, not that it matters, for the only thought running through my mind was to arrive home safe and unscathed. And from that moment on, I vowed never to ride another cab ever again. Ever.

What’s the worst thing that could happen if I commute?

Getting sweaty due to the intense heat is one. Not to mention getting late more often because of the numerous stops public vehicles make. And there’s the constant fear of getting mugged or hold-upped. Although I’m certain there have been instances where cab drivers themselves have robbed their passengers, even raped them.

So now I don’t know what’s worse. Shall I face my fear? Or avoid it if I can?

Houston, I believe we have a problem.

A Nation, Divided:My Thoughts and Opinion on the RH Bill

The drama that is the RH Bill is nowhere near its end. Up until now, government and Church leaders are at war on whether or not they should pass it as a law. The dissimilar views coming from various sects and offices in the Church and in the government resulted to an indifference that has divided a nation that once prided itself from being one and united against all adversaries.

I am aware that majority of us Filipinos are in favor of the said bill; as a matter of fact, I was one of them. I should be glad that the government created a bill that will help prevent young and gullible teens like me from getting pregnant at a young age. But before I make a hasty generalization, I decided to take a good look at the other side of the coin to know how the Church, and those who are against the bill, views it.

I believe part of the reason why most of us are against the Church on this one is because of the manner to which they have addressed the issue. We cannot blame them, of course, for coming up too strongly against a bill that supports the use of birth control pills and contraceptives -- something that they, the Church, have been fighting against for so long. What makes it worse is that the person they once thought as their number one ally is the very person supporting the bill, and even challenged them to excommunicate him. So I guess we can understand what it must be like for the Church. Then again, issuing threats and hurling insults to RH Bill proponents weren’t the right way to have addressed the situation. Throwing stale bread back to its owner will make you the worse of the two evils (how ironic). With all due respect to our political leaders, I do believe that it was unwarranted for them to shun the Church out just because they are against it. Don’t get me wrong, I am perfectly aware of the principle of secularization, although I cannot see how that applies here. What I’m trying to say is that the government should stop using the separation of the Church and state as an excuse to shun the Church out just because they decided to stand up against a bill which they find perverse and faulty.

Going back to the RH Bill, which the president aptly renamed to as the ‘Responsible Parenthood’ Bill -- I assume the proponents wish to be discreet as to what the bill really aims to implement.

After further research (i.e. blogs, forums, news, etc.), and after thoroughly reading the bill, I have decided to go against it. I am not saying this to simply protect and defend my Catholic upbringing -- believe me, I’ve had my fair share of teen troubles -- but because I was taught never to jump into an injudicious decision without further analysis and study. While I agree with the government that our population is rapidly increasing at an alarming rate, I do not believe that passing a law that allows for the use of condoms, birth control pills, and contraceptives will help solve this problem. I have read the bill for a number of times and found a few loopholes and a number of parts that I believe needs to be amended, if not removed.

Allow me to highlight some of the propositions that have left me questioning the bill:

First is the implementation of sex education in both public and private schools within the country. I am, as a matter of fact, in favor of this proposition. However, it was stipulated on the bill that the [concept] of sex education shall be taught even to GRADE SCHOOL STUDENTS. Whatever happened to protecting the innocent minds of our youth? I came from an exclusive Catholic school for girls and have been taught sex education when I was in HIGH SCHOOL. Now ask me, did the photos of the male and female genitalia made me laugh, cringe, and say ‘eeew’? No. Did I think, during that time, that it was pornography? No. Did it make me overtly curious and make me want to try to be ‘intimate’ with the opposite gender? No, it did not. All of these are for the sole reason that our teachers believed that, as high school students, we are open-minded and mature enough to understand that what was being shown to us only intends to educate us. Now tell me, will it have the same effect on grade school students (ages 12 and below)? I don’t think so. At that given age, you are not satisfying their curiosity, nor are you educating them, but you are simply exploiting their minds and making their imaginations run wild, thus the children’s desire to explore and try it themselves.

You see the problem with us grownups is we sometimes tend to put too much malice on things that the youth wouldn’t even consider as malicious. You see two young tots walking hand-in-hand, laughing and playing, when all of a sudden the boy gave the girl a peck on the cheek. You immediately stop them and forbid them from playing with each other because “Mommy/Daddy says so”. As a result, you leave them questioning themselves: “What was wrong with playing?” At such an early age, they have been introduced the concept of ‘boyfriend-girlfriend’ and of sensuality. Whatever happened to just being FRIENDS? Do not blame the society for something that you, as a parent, could have prevented from happening.

And that, my dear political leaders, is the true essence of “Responsible Parenthood”. It’s not about teaching sex education to grade school students, nor giving out free condoms to help alleviate and/or lessen the number of unwanted teenage pregnancies in our country. It’s simply about teaching and instilling good morals and the right values to our children.

So instead of teaching sex education, not to mention spending Php369 billion, why not invest the money on educational and livelihood programs that aims to support out-of-school youth. Not only will it lessen the number of uneducated youth in the country, but it will also give them the opportunity to start a new and better life. This, in turn, will help lessen the chance of them marrying young and of getting pregnant at an early age.

Another area that I find unreasonable is the giving of free condoms in clinics and health centers, as well as making birth control pills and contraceptives more accessible most especially to the poor. What condoms and unnecessary medications? Food, clothing, shelter, and event a decent job is what the poor needs. Why give them something that can’t satisfy even their basic needs? Why pass a law that allows for the use of such medications when it is already available to anyone who wishes to use/purchase it (illegally or not)? Aren’t you aware that most of the contraceptives used by women nowadays are proven to have abortifacient effects? And that, I believe, violates Articles 2 and 15 of our Constitution, which is about the protection and sanctity of the unborn.

As much as I wish to leave religion out of this, I want to accentuate the fact that we live in a country where sexual intercourse is considered sacred; an act done only by married couples – not that the latter is still being observed by many, but let’s not delve into that. My point is that by giving out free condoms and contraceptives, the government is only making the concept of sex even more vague than what it is now. They are introducing the concept of ‘free sex’ by giving people, especially the male populace, the notion that condoms and contraceptives are utterly safe, it will not get anyone pregnant, nor will it give them STD. You are simply giving them the opportunity to fool around and cheat on their spouse. How can you be sure that these men will use those condoms on their wives and not on other women? Or isn’t that a part of your problem anymore? I thought so. So much for being a country that values the family and the sanctity of marriage.

Condoms and birth control pills may control the population at some point, but it will not entirely solve nor stabilize the continuous increase in our population everyday. We do not need a law that allows for the use of such medications, especially when it is not well thought of and when further research and study must be done.

The RH Bill is simply giving us the false notion that:

Over-population = Poverty
Thus: Over-population, injected by the RH Bill = Decrease in poverty

Are there any research and/or empirical evidences to support that analogy? Over-population is not the sole cause of poverty. True, it is a factor, but it is just one of the few that results to poverty in the Philippines. It seems that the bill’s proponent/s may have overlooked this fact. What about the fact that the Philippines in an underdeveloped country? And what about corruption? Oh, yes, the Big C.

President Aquino’s slogan during his campaign for presidency was, “Pag walang corrupt, walang mahirap”. A statement that earned him the trust of millions of Filipinos, and which paved his way towards presidency. Who can say no to a public servant who promises to help eradicate corruption? The president believes that passing the RH Bill as a law will not only decrease the rate of poverty in the country, but may also lessen the number of corrupt politicians in the government. How? Spending Php360 billion for free condoms and hospitalization for the poor, and cheaper birth control pills and contraceptives will not make corrupt officials better. Ergo, it will only make them worse.

And where, if I may ask, is the government planning to get the funds that will help support this law? From our VAT? So instead of providing jobs and other livelihood programs for millions of poor Filipinos, the government instead will supply them with “free” condoms and cheaper contraceptives. I don’t see the point of it all. I don’t intend to sound rude and inconsiderate, but as much as I am willing to help the poor, don’t you think that instead of teaching them how to become better and responsible individuals, you are making them more dependent on the government and on the upper echelons of the society by passing the RH Bill?

Enough with wasteful laws and irrelevant government spending, what we need is a law that will help alleviate poverty by providing the poor with educational and livelihood programs that will help them provide for and satisfy their everyday needs. So I say NO to the RH Bill. The president needs to divert his focus (i.e. time and government funds) on projects that can actually improve the economy and the quality of life of every Filipino.

My Summer Kind of Love

Thank God for B, I was able to enjoy the remaining days of my summer vacation. School started a couple of days ago, so I'm glad that I had the chance to go out of town even for just a few days.

Our stay in Baguio was definitely a blast, and it pains me to leave and say goodbye to its cool weather, scrumptious foods, and picturesque scenes.

This week's Top 5 Picks are kind of personal since I haven't gone out the entire week, and nothing have really inspired me except for our humble abode and the things and people within it.

The perfect companion this summer.

2. Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara
Despite not going out, I still make it a point to pamper myself just in case B decides to pay me a surprise visit. Haha. Although I don't do the whole foundation, gloss, and blush process; just a little drama on my eyes and I'm good to go! Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara has always been one of my all-time favorites cuz there's no need for double application. Just one brush, and I'm all set.

3. Moleskin
Writing comes easily to me, which is why I always carry my trusty notebook and journal with me.

4. Forever 21 Tank Tops
As most of you may know, it's summer here in the Flips, and it's probably one of the hottest summers we've ever had. And coming from someone who's quite conservative, believe me when I say that I'd rather walk around naked than feel sticky and stinky under my clothes. Thank God for my amazing Forever 21 tees, I can feel fresh, chic, and comfortable even under this heat.

5. Family
Nothing feels better than having your family around to keep you company and share precious moments and laughter with.

Anyway...

Last Mothers Day my sister and I decided to cook breakfast for our Mom -- like we always do. We prepared: American Style Hash Browns and Banana Crepes.
And here's how you do it:Banana Crepe

There are three important ingredients in making a Banana Crepe: bananas, cream, and the crepe. Since the cream needs to be chilled before spreading it on the crepe, we have to prepare it first. Here's how:

What You Need:
2 250mL Nestle All Purpose Cream
1 250mL Alaska Condensed Milk
A pinch of salt

Directions:
1. Mix the all purpose cream with the condensed milk. Whip until you achieve your desired consistency.
2. Add a pinch of salt.
3. Transfer in a clean bowl, cover with cling wrap or foil, and place in the freezer to chill.

And now we do the crepe...

What You Need:
1 box pancake mix (I suggest you use Maya)
2 eggs
1 cup of water
2 tbsp cooking oil

Directions:
1. Just simply follow the instructions written at the back of the pancake mix.
2. In my case, I first let the pancake mix dissolve in the water, add the eggs, and the oil.
3. Mix until there are no lumps.
4. Be sure to make is as thin or crepe-like thin as possible. You don't want to end up eating a banana pancake.

Now that we're done with the cream and crepe, it's not time to prepare the bananas. Simply slice it into smaller pieces until you're certain you have enough bananas for your crepe.

Take one (1) crepe, and spread cream on the middle part. Add some bananas, put some more cream, then close the crepe. It's up to you if you want to garnish it with some more cream, nuts, or even other fruits on top.
American Style Hash Brown
An all-time family favorite! My sister was at first hesitant to share her recipe, but whatevs. It's good to share. Haha! FYI: You have to prepare the potatoes a day before cooking the hash browns.

What You Need:
Large white onions
Potatoes
3-5 cups of flour
3-4 eggs
A pinch of baking soda
Salt and Pepper to taste
Cooking Oil

Directions:
1. Wash your potatoes thoroughly. Make sure there aren't any dust left. Cut them into thin wedges, say 3/4 of an inch.
2. Wash the potatoes and pat to dry.
3. Cover it with tissue paper and pack in cling wraps or foil overnight.

The next day...
1. In a mixing bowl, mix the flour and eggs.
2. Add a pinch of baking soda.
3. Add salt and pepper, then set aside.
4. Chop your onions into thin strips, then add in your potato wedges.
5. Add the onions and potatoes on your flour and egg mixture, mix until the onions and potatoes are covered with the mixture.
6. Deep fry into perfection.

Serve these with a smile and kiss, and you'll surely make your momma proud! :)

* * *I must say, I do have to apologize because it was only now that I have heard of Diane Mott Davidson and her culinary mystery book series. The book was on sale and I was immediately attracted by its cover: a cupcake. I was thinking, “Hey, it’s probably one of those chick lit and catfight thing, might as well give it a try.” Yeah, it’s been a while since I’ve read one of those. Well, I was wrong. Little did I know, this is already book 14 of a series of mystery, deaths, etc. in the little town of Colorado, and “Super Chef Goldy” is always there to save the day. Okay, that was harsh.

The book was okay. It wasn’t as intense as any mystery novels I’ve read, plus the pacing was a tad too slow, and I was able to know who the murderer was at my first guess. Still, there’s something about the book that made me want to finish reading it, plus the fact that I don’t want to put my $1 to waste. Haha.

There was never a time that Goldy, the main character, didn’t annoy me. I think she’s a narcissistic, self-centered woman who’ll do what she thinks is right since her second husband, who happens to be an investigator, was always there to save her smart arse. She actually reminds me of Harry Potter. I mean, she would’ve been dead a couple of times but was always saved by a supporting character. Plus she must’ve swallowed a gallon of Espresso in the entire 72 hours that they were trying to solve the case. I swear, I’m addicted to coffee but I wouldn’t be having more than 10 Espresso shots in a day. Please. No way.

I had a good laugh while reading this review by another reader:
“I can suspend reality and accept the coincidences of all those involved in the murders are in Goldy's life right now, that she's super-sleuth compared to the cops, and similar quirks associated with the murder-mystery genre. But Super Goldy, as she is in this book, is just too much. What human can set up for a catering event, and deal with cops after finding a body one evening, then the next day cater three events, plus run around town, deal with visitors dropping by, and taxi her son and his friends from snowboarding, and the next day get up early for church, crash a car, fall down a ravine (hitting treeS and rocks), run around town again, visit the ski slope and be knocked out, go to the hospital, get up the next morning for a quickie with her husband before catering another event...and solve a mystery. Did I mention that it was snowing the whole time?”
MAJOR LOL. Good point right there.

What I like about the book though is how the author included the recipes for the dishes she fixed during the story at the back of the book. As a matter of fact, I’m thinking of scourging every bookstore for her other novels just to have a copy of her other recipes. Unless I can get them off of the internet… well, I just might. Haha! And because I’m feeling extra generous, I feel like sharing these recipes to you guys, I mean for those who don’t have a copy of the book yet. Oh wait, will I get arrested for illegal duplication or something? I have to do a little research on that one first.

So for those of you who are up to a less mind-boggling and a very light reading, then this book’s just right for you.

And with that, I give this book a 3 out of 5 crowns. I would have given it two crowns if it wasn’t for the free recipes. Haha!

ANTM Cycle 16 Episode 9 and 10

Hey y'all! Sorry for the lack of post over the past week. Was bus with school and all that jazz. Anyhoo, here's an ATNM update for you guys.

Episode 9

For this episode, the girls had their first Moroccan shoot at a dessert where they had to deliver their fiercest pose on top of a camel.
Molly and Hannah rocked it, while Kasia had a problem posing cuz of her plus sized figure.

Alexandria and Kasia were this episode's bottom two.
Alexandria was once again reprimanded for tying to direct the shoot, while according to judges, Kasia needs to work on her confidence.

In the end, Kasia's lack of confidence got the best of her so she was sent home.

Episode 10

And then there's four. For their next challenge, the girls were taught how to tea dance. Little did they know, they had to perform the dance in front of a live audience as part of their challenge.

Brittani was chosen as the challenge winner, and she chose Hannah to accompany her on a one-on-one runway walk lesson with Miss Jay.
As for their next photoshoot, they had to pose as Moroccan women who were on a fashion journey.

Hannah and Alexandria were this week's bottom two.
According to the judges, Hannah's photo would have been amazing if she put more effort on her facial expressions. Alexandria once again tried to take control and totally lost focus on the shoot.

In the end, Alexandria's dominant attitude had proven to be too much so she was sent home.

Hey world! Let me start by greeting all you lovely mothers out there a very happy mothers day! Today's your special day so make the most out of it and enjoy!

What I'm about to do now may be (kind of) embarrassing since I don't normally do this, but hey it's mothers day and my Mom deserves the best. Plus the fact that I failed to buy her a present... (oooops...)

So last month I joined this special mothers day contest where you could win a shopping spree, makeover, and a photoshoot for you and your Mom. All you have to do is submit an essay about why you think your mom is the best. Sounds simple, right? Well it was easy for me cuz I've never felt so inspired. And considering what my Mom had been through for God-knows-how-long, plus the fact that she lost a lot of lbs cuz of her intense diet, I just think that she deserves to be pampered and spoiled during this special day.

And because I was over-confident that I will win, I didn't bother looking for gifts or whatnots for my Mom. I was simply waiting for the email announcing that I won the contest. -- Yes, my dear readers, that was how optimistic I was. Haha!

Unfortunately, my entry didn't win. What's up with me and online contests, anyway? I never seem to win any of them. Haha. But despite not winning the contest, I still would like to share to you guys my essay. And hopefully, even my Mom would get to read this:

"What makes my Mom the best?

Growing up, I never knew who my mom was; I only knew her by name. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not adopted.

My parents are separated, so being a single mom, my mom had to work a tad harder than most mothers, thus the lack of time for me and my two younger siblings. She worked as an OFW in Hong Kong for a few years, so we were left under the care of my gram and my aunts.

When my mom decided to stay with us for good, I can’t honestly say that everything had been smooth sailing. Because of the years spent away from us, our relationship with our Mom had been nothing but cordial. We were aloof and we sometimes felt that she was more of a stranger than our Mom. I see the pain in her eyes whenever we choose our aunts over her, I wanted so much to hug her and to console her, but I was too afraid to even try. My mom did her very best to win our hearts, our affection, and our love for her. Her dream of us becoming a family despite being incomplete was the only thing that kept her driven and motivated. Despite our indifference to her, there was never a single day that that we didn’t feel loved and cared for by our Mom.

It’s only now that I can proudly say that I have the best relationship with our Mom. I guess everything happens for a reason because all the indifference that we had before have now been replaced with our unconditional love for each other. A few people have once told me that it’s too late to try to salvage what was left of our relationship with our Mom. I beg to differ. For me, there’s no such as thing as “too late” when it comes to love, happiness, and a one-of-a-kind bond and friendship with your mom.

I am very proud of my Mom and even though I don’t say it as much as I want to, I love her. She has sacrificed so much for us; even the chance to love again. For her, family comes first. Everything else is second. So despite being a broken family, I have no regrets and I wouldn’t wish for another life than this. My mom has showered us with so much love that it filled the empty void that was my Dad. Sure, life can be tough sometimes but I know that the love that we share as a family will help us surpass all of it.

The fact that she managed to raise all three of us singlehandedly makes her, in my eyes, the best single mom there is."

One of my favorite photos of my Mom. As funny as it may sound, I can still remember this day... how hard she was trying to cover up her "huge legs" with my dress and the look she gave my sister for spoiling her dress. Hahaha! Happy mothers day, Mom. I love you!

1. Aviators
I’m not used to carrying umbrellas with me despite the scorching heat of the sun – this explains my tan, haha! – which is why I always carry my trusty aviators with me.

2. Buffalo Wings and Things
I have eaten so many buffalo wings my entire life, and I have to say that Buffalo Wings and Things have THE best buffalo wings of all time! You guys should try it. They have a branch at Food Street, Ortigas Home Depot and at Dela Rosa St., Legazpi Village in Makati.
I suggest you order the Triple Sampler cuz it's "the bomb". Favorite flavors: Honey BBQ, Rookie, and Garlic Parmesan.
3. Piano Covers
I was never a fan of today’s music, for some reason. I think they’re too loud and some of them don’t even make sense at all. Sorry, Lil Wayne. Whenever I’m busy or I need to rest and unwind, I have a collection of piano and violin covers, as well as some classical music to keep me company while reading a good book.

4. Victoria’s Secret Lip Butter
The solution to my chapped lips. This is definitely a fashion must-have!

5. Cropped Tees
I have noticed while I was in school yesterday, that most girls are wearing cropped tees, despite the dreaded dress code, so out of curiosity I decided to stop by the nearby mall and try (not buy) them on. And indeed, cropped tees are the perfect outfit for summer!

Growing up I have always wanted to try a lot of things. My choice of profession was constantly changing. From being a scientist to an actress, to a ballerina, an astronaut, a chef, a librarian, a doctor, a lawyer, and even a giant squid. Yes, a giant squid. I wanted to try all of that; to know how it feels and to simply experience the joy of trying new things.

Despite pursuing a degree in business, I know that someday I’ll be a preschool teacher. When will that happen, we’ll never really know. All I know is that one day, someday, I will be one.

However, certain events are slowly altering the course of my life. All of a sudden I decided to revive my dormant blog, I’ve been attending photography events, and I’ve been receiving invites for photography seminars, etc. So that made me wonder, “is photography my real calling?”

I admit that I have always been fascinated with remarkable and inspiring photographs. I mean, who doesn’t, right? And I have this uncanny knack of taking good photographs even without having apt training. So is that it then? Am I really destined to become a photographer?

Should I become one, I don’t think I will be a serious photographer. You know like Nigel Barker, and those who cover fashion shows and events? I’m not up to that, I think it’s too passé. What I want is to inspire people and to be able to depict the reality of life through photographs… I want to become a street photographer.

And because of this current “fixation”, I decided to do a little research about famous street photographers and whatnots. And I have to say that I am impressed with Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work.

Hailed as the Father of Photojournalism, Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) is widely recognized as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. Coming from a prominent family, Henri started as a painter, until he discovered his love of street photography.

Savage Beauty

Last May 2, 2011 was the fashion world’s much anticipated annual Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala. During this event, the crème de la crème of the fashion industry gather together at the Metropolitan Museum to celebrate art and fashion. This year’s Met Gala was made extra special in order to pay homage to the legendary fashion designer and icon, Alexander McQueen. The event was entitled “Savage Beauty”, where they showcased an exhibition of famous works by our beloved Lee.

It was truly a very bittersweet and intimate moment for the entire fashion industry. Alexander McQueen was in every ways an artist, an icon, an inspiration, a LEGEND. He will never be forgotten.

Hey y’all!

Have I mentioned that I got my hair cut over the weekend? No? Well, I did, and I’m still in the I-thought-I’ll-like-it-but-I’m-not-so-sure-anymore phase. LOL. Since I’ve been sporting long hair for God-knows-how-long, I decided to cut my hair short. Well, it’s not Victoria Beckham short, really, it still has that short yet flirty vibe. And yes, I realized upon cutting my hair that I haven’t had my graduation photo taken yet. Shiz.

The Royal Hats Wedding

Salutations, my dear minions!

I'm sure most of you still have that Royal Wedding hangover. However, I'm not here to gush about how beautiful Kate was -- she's effortlessly beautiful; nor how elegant her wedding dress was. Oh that divine piece of beauty! Sarah Burton definitely did not disappoint! I'm sure the late Alexander McQueen is very proud of his successor. Although I heard there are a handful who don't fancy her dress. Really? Oh well. Let's not worry about them and their eccentric sense of style, I'm sure they have their reasons.

I've been using Photoshop a lot, which is why I utterly forgot how to edit/manipulate photos through PowerPoint. Thank God for my Office Productivity class, and we were once again taught the basic elements of MS Office.

For our final exam, we were asked to create an invitation, a flyer, and edit one of our favorite photos through PowerPoint. My initial reaction was it was a total piece of cake. Boy was I wrong! I was so used to tinkering photos through PSD that I was totally having a hard time with the buttons and stuff, but I surpassed it. Thank heavens!

When I was still studying at DLSU, I know of this place called Agno where there's probably a bajillion stalls that sell all kinds of food. From chips, to dumplings, to pasta and pizza... you name it, they have it!

One of my favorite stalls there, whose vendor's name I failed to ask, sells one of the best Pasta Puttanesca I've ever eaten. I was meaning to visit it, but I heard that the university already tore it down to give way for a new building. Ugh. Oh well... c'est la vie! Maybe someday I'll be able to eat a Puttanesca that's as good as Agno's.

Reader's Nook

I'm a self-proclaimed bookworm, I think I always say that. I prefer the solitary confines of my room (or a coffee shop) over the loud noise and club music in a bar. There was a never day that would pass without me buying books for pleasure reading. Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that my funds have been running low due to my incessant and uncontrollable book purchases. B have long ago warned me about this, but I ignored it nonetheless. So for this year I resolved to stop buying costly books and be happy and satisfied with my current collection. In the end though, I ended up getting all-too depressed and extremely bipolar. Haha!

A couple of weeks ago, while I was out on a date with myself at Serendra, I came across this bookstore that sells bargained books. My heart literally leaped for joy at the sight of it; and as soon as I went in, I fell in love. Clearly, it was a match made in heaven. The wondrous sight of all those books reaching out to me, waiting to be bought and opened was irresistible. Deciding which books to buy was the hardest part, for what kind of book enthusiast will let those unsold books rot in those dark shelves? In the end, I (sort of) resisted temptation and bought two books. I left the bookstore with the promise of coming back for more.

It was while I was having high tea at a certain coffee slash book shop that it would be a great idea to share these good finds with you guys. You see, these books I bought were on sale for two reasons: either they didn't make it on New York Time's Best Sellers List, or they weren't written by infamous authors. So I believe it's just right to give them their fair share of the limelight they very much deserve.

So what better way to do that than create a new segment on blog, right? Thus, Reader's Nook was born.

First on my Reader's Nook list is Stone Garden; a heart-wrenching novel by Molly Moynahan.

Stone Garden revolves around Alice, a teenage girl who wishes to discover her purpose in life after the tragic and unexpected death of Matthew, her life-long love. As Alice goes on her journey of acceptance and moving on, she is faced with new experiences that will truly alter the course of her life. Experiences that will make her see and appreciate what she has, and experiences that will make her forget and let go of what she once had.

Let’s forget about fashyen for a bit and focus our attention to Him.

During the Lenten Season it has been a family tradition to follow activities made specifically for this time of year. For instance, on Maundy Thursday we are accustomed to doing the Visita Iglesia, a Spanish tradition where we visit 14 Christian Churches and do the Stations of the Cross.

For this year, we were only able to visit two cuz we ran out of time since the second Church we visited was kind of far from the metro.

We first went to San Roque Parish Church in Pasay City. As much as possible I try to pass by that Church every chance I get cuz that’s where I grew up and studied during my pre-school years. I wasn’t able to take a photo though.

Second stop was at the Regina Rosarii Institute of Contemplation in Asia (Regina RICA), located at Sitio Aguho Sampaloc, Tanay. Regardless of how far the place may be, just the sight of Mother Regina standing on top of the hill waiting for us definitely made me feel like I’ve done a great thing. Going up that hill was tiresome, but the view on top will definitely made up for it.

For five years now, it has been one of my traditions to attend the Kalbaryo Procession with B and his family every Good Friday.

During the Kalbaryo, locals in Makati show their artistic side by creating a tableau of the 14 Stations of the Cross. Here, people would stay up all night reading/singing the Pasyon, praying the rosary, and simply have fun with their neighbors. Each Kalbaryo is unique because it depicts the suffering and pain that Jesus had suffered before and after He was crucified.

The procession starts at exactly 6p. Here, representatives from each Kalbaryo are given a cross to carry and parade around Makati. Church ministers see to it that we stop and pass by each Kalbaryo for a little blessing and prayer. It’s non-stop procession for 3 hours, which I have now come to love and look forward to. I highly suggest that you guys should come visit and join the procession (plus concert) next year. It truly is a life-changing experience.

ANTM Cycle 16 Episode 8

This week's challenge is all about looking your best regardless of where you are.

Of course, what better way to do this than bring the girls in a dump site and have them strike their best pose? The girls also had to wear couture eco-friendly dresses custom-made by Filipino designer Michael Cinco for each of the girls. Filipino pride, indeed!

A day before their shoot, the girls had to go to their first go sees and try to book as much shows as they can. Molly was able to go to four but didn't really impress the clients. Jaclyn, on the other hand, only get to 2 clients but managed to book them both. Unfortunately for her, this wasn't enough so she was sent home.

ANTM Cycle 16 Episode 7

For this week’s challenge, the girls had to take part in Warriors in Pink by Ford, a campaign for women fighting breast cancer. Each girl was given their own warrior symbol, and had to use them as an inspiration to do their own style, hair, and makeup.

The winner of the challenge will win a national print ad for Warriors in Pink, a PSA that will be shown nationwide, plus an additional 2012 Ford Focus. Much to the other girls' dismay, Alexandria won the challenge.

Of course what ANTM episode would end without a little drama? As usual everybody hated Alexandria for winning the challenge, so Brittani decided to let her pent up anger out and give Alexandria a piece of her mind. Here’s the video:

Oh Brittani, I know how much of a bitch Alexandria can sometimes be, but you just can’t – CAN’T – act like that especially while you’re in a shoot. To add insult to that, Nigel Barker and your client was there! Did you ever think that it might just ruin your chance of winning the competition? Just sayin’.

The next day the girls, together with Miss Jay, headed to the Universal Studios for their next challenge where they need to be “crazies for fashion”.

I realized a few minutes after I posted my latest entry that tomorrow (April 15) is the start of Natasha Poly and Peter Bakker's 3-day wedding! Can I just say that I am beyond excited? If you ask me which wedding I want to be a part of: The Royal Wedding or Natasha and Peter's? (William's receding hairline or Natasha's flawless body) I wouldn't even think twice. Hands down, NATASHA and PETER! Yes, that's how much I love her.

Bonjour!

It's almost 1a here in the Flips, kind of tired but still not in the mood to sleep. I've been trying to create different looks for my Sense and Style segment, but I got too lazy to finish them so whatevs. In the middle of doing them, I realized I've been listening to only 3 songs over and over again. I call them my "Feel-Good Songs". Haha! Just a little something to boost my self-esteem whenever I feel like a useless rag. And I think it would be great to share them with you guys.
